The Columbia Thunderstorm II pant is an acceptable waterproof, breathable pant available at a modest price. Yet, it has a couple of design elements that may not be appealing to some individuals. Specifically, the pant is oversized with large boot-cut bottoms that make the pant more suitable as a second layer. Additionally, instead of pockets, there are two slits that expose what is beneath (e.g. skin) to the elements. Hence, the product NOT really designed for bicycling unless the rider has cycling shorts underneath and ankle bands.

Considering that a breathable, waterproof pant can cost several hundred dollars, a reviewer must take the modest price of this pant into account. Yet, two of the somewhat undesirable design elements have little to do with the cost. The pant legs bottoms are very large, perhaps designed for large winter boots or even ski boots. They are awkwardly large for bicycling or even casual use. Moreover, normal pockets instead of slits would be helpful. Exposing the underlying skin to the cold and precipitation is not pleasant.

In terms of quality, this pant has somewhat thin fabric that can tear relatively easily. The lightweight, flexible outer shell may appeal to certain users but I personally would prefer something more rugged. Also, there are limits to its level of waterproofing. In a torrential downpour, some water still gets through.

If you are financially constrained and intend to uses this pant over another layer of clothing, the Columbia Thunderstorm II pant may be an acceptable choice. Yet, if you need a breathable rain pant to be used as a standalone garment, you might want to consider alternatives, especially if the flared pant legs don't suit your particular needs.

These pants too wide at the bottom for biking. They are also sized huge. I'm 5'10" with a 32 inseam and the large pants were about 3" too long.
